If you are reading this, it means
you’re in the beauty industry, whether knowingly or unknowingly. This might
come as a shock to you if you think you’re not. But the truth is: everybody (Yes
that includes you) is in the beauty industry. We all want to look Presentable, Charming,
Attractive, Glamorous, Sexy and most of all, command the attention and respect
of everyone around us – sounds just like you right?
It does not matter what you
do, the beauty industry-land is where we all spend the first few hours of the
day. We want to look trendy in that new outfit. We want to rock that new shoe.
We want to flaunt that Versace bag. And we want smell incredibly “delicious”
(never mind the expression).
But if you’re a key party (Makeup Artist, Hair Stylist, Cosmetologist or Nail Technician) in the beauty industry, here is the new truth:
Be Vulnerable!!!
Vulnerability is the new
sexy.
You’re not in this industry
because you want to fill a space or God forbid, you couldn't get a job after 5
years in the university. P.S: if that is why you’re here- you need a change of
profession ASAP.
If that is cleared, here are
ways you can be vulnerable.
By the way, “vulnerability
in this context does not mean weakness. Rather, it means: “daring to do the
possibilities that have the ‘im’ tag in front of them”.
First and foremost, being in
the beauty industry means being in the business industry; Yes you love what you
do but you must make money from loving it. So, it will be apt to say, beauty is
business.
So be vulnerable with your beauty business. Don’t just live by the beauty school rules,
dive into new ideas. Create a niche for yourself in the market. Be known for a unique
style. Create your own signature and be your own brand. This is the first part,
be vulnerable to learn new stuffs.
Secondly, dare!
Take your profession to a
new level. You’ve been thinking of doing something about your business for some
time now and you don’t seem to take off. It’s time to dare. Don’t hold back.
Don’t think about failing or succeeding, just think DOING. Kill the fear. Being
a beautypreneur like every other entrepreneur, you need to be innovative and
creative. And you can’t get those innovations and creativity without being daring.
So go ahead – push your
limits this time. Think about what you want to do, plan it out on paper, think
it through but never “over-analyze”
it. Rather, break it down into smaller sections and execute your plans. Dare to
dream big dreams and live the reality in smaller bits everyday.
Next is: Measure Up.
Don’t
do things because everyone in the industry is doing it. Do it because it means
something to you. Measure up to the things you do. Stand by it. When you create
a niche for yourself; measure up to that niche. It might not be perfect in the
beginning (your job is not to be perfect), just
do it like Nike. When you measure up to what you do in business, you stand
out. In an industry of creative arts like the beauty industry, your stand will
only be noticed when you measure up.
Lastly, be your own brand.
In life, what people say and what people do are two different things. This is
the norm you have to work against. Don’t create a mob you can’t control. Don’t create something different that you
don’t represent. When you create your own niche, live it.
Be your own brand.
You’re what people think you’re when you act who you are directly and
indirectly.
So, be vulnerable to Learn,
to Dare, to Measure Up and to Be Your Own Brand. Never mind the dictionary
meaning of vulnerability.
In business, Vulnerability is Sexy.
By the way, how was your book this week?
